Norway – 100 years celebration 2009

The Bergen line and the Rjukan railway and ferry line

2009 is it 100 years since the Bergen line between Oslo and Bergen opened.

At the moment we are operating 2 steam main line locos (1914 & 1922), 2 main line diesel locos - NOHAB (1954) and 3 electric locos (1922 & 1951) as well as 12 wooden coaches.

Our coaches are all made of teak and built between 1909 and 1926. We have three 1.class carriages and one of them is delivered to the opening of the Bergen line in 1909. It is a salon coach. The next one was built in 1912, also for the Bergen line but in 1946 it was refurbished inside. The last one was delivered as a coach for the King of Norway and for the board of the Norwegian State railways in 1923.  It is still in its original condition and was used for the Norwegian King until 1940. This coach has a little kitchen, 3 sleeping compartments (one is normally used for travel services) and half of the coach is a big salon. At the end it is a big open balcony

We also have one 2.class coach and three 3.class coaches together with post- and luggage van.

And at last we also have two dining cars – one delivered in 1926. It has 40 seats and the last one have 20 seats. We are cooperating with a well know restaurant in Oslo (www.sult.no - sult = eng. hunger)  who can offer almost everything.

The celebration will be in mainly different 2 steps.

  1. A train on The Day of opening 20. November for guests.
  2. A train which will use 4 days from Oslo to Bergen making stops at every important station along the line.
            4. June Oslo – Hønefoss with stops at Hakadal, Roa and Jevnaker.

5. June Hönefoss – Al with stops at Sokna, Gulsvik, Nesbyen and Gol.

6. June Al – Voss, with stops at Geilo. Haugastöl, Finse and Myrdal

7. June Voss – Bergen with stops at Dale, Vaksdal and Arna

This train will be hauled by the newly restored Bergen Line steam loco 26 c 411 from 1922.

The trains will also have a mail car served by the Norwegian Postal Museum with special stamps, brands and books regarding the postal service on the Bergen Line

In Bergen there will be two steam trains at the same time on Sunday 7.June. The celebration Train from Oslo together with a special train from the museum line – Gamle Vossebanen.

During the summer at least three trains will be running between Oslo and Bergen.

On Sunday 14.June the celebration train will return from Bergen. This train will be hauled mainly by the steam loco 26c 411, but because of trouble with smoke in many of the long tunnels we will also use NOHAB diesel loco.

This train will have dining car from Oslo to Bergen. Most of the cars will be 2.class and some few seats 1.class in the salon car 950 delivered to the opening of the Bergen line.

For NOHAB or friends of diesel locos there will be a short train leaving Oslo central station Saturday 13. June consisting of our dining coaches and one 1.class salon car heading towards Bergen hauled by a NOHAB diesel.

On Friday 14.August we will run a train from Oslo to Bergen consisting of 1.class coaches from 1909 to 1930, all built in teak. Also the 100 year old car ao 950 delivered to the Bergen line. There will also be two dining cars where you can have all the meals during the travel. Mail car will follow the train. Locomotives used are the steam loco 26c 411 from Hönefoss to Finse, otherwise the electric el 11.2107 from 1954. Will make a stop at Finse where the newly restore museum for Bergen railway is located. The timetable is not quite ready yet, but there are plans for photostop along the route.

The return trip from Bergen to Oslo will be on Sunday 16.august. The steam loco will haul the train from Finse to Hönefoss.

We’ll take the samejourney on Friday 11.September OsloBergen. Return on Sunday 13. September.

The Rjukan railway and ferry line

There have been plans for year  for the preservation of the Rjukan railway system including the ferry line Tinnoset – Mael.

But now it seems they have hit their goal – and Rjukan (city and factories, Norsk Hydro) and the railway system is aiming for the Unesco World Heritage List. Therefore on the 8. and 9. August the will be running a special train from Notodden to Tinnoset, ferry over the lake Tinnsjöen and train from Mael to Rjukan. This will be the 100 years celebration of the railway and ferry line.

On the same time the steam railway ferry D/F Ammonia, 1929 will be under steam, but unfortunately not sailing. There will be arranged demonstrations and guided tours on board.

The “new” railway ferry  M/F Storegut, 1956 will be sailing

The trains between Notodden and Tinnoset will be open to anybody and hauled by steam loco on Saturday 8. and Sunday 9. August.
